Scratch Resistance of Melamine Boards and PET Boards: A Sourcing Guide for Overseas Furniture Buyers

For overseas furniture manufacturers and project buyers, the wear-resistance of the board surface is a critical procurement criterion—alongside environmental and moisture-resistance standards—that cannot be overlooked. Cabinet doors, hotel furniture, and commercial display cases are frequently subjected to opening and closing, friction, and handling, making their surfaces prone to scratches and wear. Surface damage not only compromises aesthetics but also increases the risk of after-sales claims. Many buyers confuse the wear-resistance characteristics of melamine finishes with those of PET finishes; judging quality solely by price often leads to problems during project implementation.

The surface wear-resistance of a board depends on the surface finish, the wear-resistant layer, and the manufacturing-pressing process—it is not determined solely by the decorative pattern. Melamine boards feature an inherent melamine wear-resistant layer; high-quality melamine-impregnated paper contains wear-resistant aluminum oxide particles. A higher wear-resistance rating (measured in abrasion cycles) indicates superior scratch resistance. High-grade melamine decorative boards are ideal for high-traffic commercial settings, such as hotel cabinetry and lockers in public areas. Conversely, lower-grade melamine finishes have thinner wear layers and are prone to scratching.

PET boards utilize a polyester film as the surface layer. While standard PET films offer a smooth tactile feel and excellent stain resistance, their wear-resistance is generally inferior to that of high-grade melamine finishes. However, the market also offers upgraded, wear-resistant PET films; these incorporate special formulations that balance a soft-touch feel with scratch resistance. A common misconception among buyers is that a thicker PET film equates to superior wear-resistance; in reality, the film's formulation and manufacturing process have a far greater impact on performance than its thickness.

Here are four recommendations for overseas buyers regarding material selection:

First, during the inquiry stage, verify abrasion-resistance figures with the supplier and request official test reports rather than relying solely on verbal descriptions; for commercial furniture, the specific abrasion-resistance grade must be clearly defined. Second, distinguish between usage scenarios—do not use the same type of board for everything. Prioritize high-abrasion-resistant finishes for exposed door panels subject to frequent friction, while opting for materials with lower abrasion-resistance requirements for internal back panels to effectively manage costs. Third, ensure proper protection during processing and packaging; even if a board meets abrasion-resistance standards, the surface can still be scratched during factory cutting, transport, or handling if protective film is not applied. Fourth, request samples in advance to conduct on-site abrasion-resistance testing. Once received, simulate actual usage conditions to verify that the material meets project requirements before placing a bulk order.

No surface finish is completely scratch-proof. Wear-resistance is a relative metric, so the right material should be selected based on the specific application scenario. Both melamine and PET boards offer distinct advantages regarding wear-resistance; choosing the appropriate material can significantly reduce post-purchase issues related to wear and tear.

If you are sourcing furniture boards for commercial or residential projects, please let us know the intended use. Zhenshijie can recommend melamine or PET boards with the suitable wear-resistance rating and provide samples for your own wear-resistance testing and evaluation.
